North American Congress on Latin America (NACLA)
The North American Congress on Latin America (NACLA) is an independent, nonprofit organization founded in 1966 that works toward a world in which the nations and peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean are free from oppression and injustice, and enjoy a relationship with the United States based on mutual respect, free from economic and political subordination. To that end, its mission is to provide information and analysis on the region, and on its complex and changing relationship with the United States, as tools for education and advocacy—to foster knowledge beyond borders. Together with MERIP and Jadaliyya, the Congress is a partner in the cross-regional, cross-platform collaboration that makes up the Latin East project.

NACLA’s Report on the Americas is the oldest and most widely read progressive journal covering Latin America and its relationship with the United States. The first issue of the Report’s 50th volume found the publication reaching well beyond the borders of Latin America in search of the region’s wider, global, and reciprocal influences in relation to the Middle East.
Responding to Latin America’s striking and strategic outreach to the Middle East during the Pink Tide, contributors engaged with questions—as yet largely unasked, much less answered—about how the image and role of Latin America in the Middle East changed in the process, permitting new and more dynamic comparative research agendas between both regions.
Key questions included: what informed Latin America’s turn to the Middle East during the Left turn, and how was it manifested? How did it draw on, and how did it alter, previously existing images of Latin America in the Middle East in popular culture, literature, and media? How powerfully did common cause around anti-US sentiment in Latin America and the Middle East inform new solidarities, and with what consequences? How did different meanings of “Left” in each region shape understandings and misunderstandings of a new relationship? Did new state-to-state level relations between leaders in Latin America and the Middle East percolate among populations at large? How were longstanding areas of South-South cooperation—in terms of energy, trade, and diplomacy—affected? And after the Pink Tide in Latin America and the Arab Spring’s turn to deadly winter, what is left of these changes, and what is their future?

NACLA Report on the Americas es la revista progresiva más antigua y más leída que cubre América Latina y su relación con los Estados Unidos. El primer número del volumen 50 del Informe encontró que la publicación se extendía mucho más allá de las fronteras de América Latina en busca de las influencias más amplias, globales y recíprocas de la región en relación con el Medio Oriente.
Respondiendo al alcance llamativo y estratégico de América Latina hacia el Medio Oriente durante la Marea Rosa, los contribuyentes se comprometieron con preguntas—aún en gran parte sin responder, mucho menos respondidas—sobre cómo la imagen y el papel de América Latina en el Medio Oriente cambiaron a lo largo proceso, permitiendo agendas de investigación comparativa nuevas y más dinámicas entre ambas regiones.
Algunas de las preguntas clave que fueron incluídas son las siguientes: ¿qué informó el giro de América Latina hacia el Medio Oriente durante el auge de la izquierda y cómo se manifestó? ¿Cómo se basó y cómo se alteraron las imágenes de América Latina en el Medio Oriente que existían con anterioridad en la cultura popular, la literatura y los medios de comunicación? ¿Cuán poderosa fue la causa común en torno al sentimiento antiestadounidense en América Latina y Medio Oriente para informar nuevas solidaridades, y cuáles fueron las consecuencias? ¿Cómo los diferentes significados de "izquierda" en cada región moldean los entendimientos y los malentendidos de una nueva relación? ¿Cómo fue que las nuevas relaciones a nivel de interestatal, entre los líderes en América Latina y el Medio Oriente, se filtraron entre las poblaciones en general? ¿Cómo se vieron afectadas las áreas de cooperación Sur-Sur en términos de energía, comercio y diplomacia? Y luego del retroceso de la Marea Rosa en América Latina y el cambio de la primavera al invierno árabe, ¿qué queda de estos cambios y cuál es su futuro?

كان من بين الأسئلة المفتاحية: أي أفكار غذت التوجه الأمريكي اللاتيني نحو الشرق الأوسط إبان الانعطافة اليسارية، وبأي صور تجلى؟ كيف استلهم، وكيف غير، الصور السابقة عن أمريكا اللاتينية في الشرق الأوسط، في ثقافته الجماهيرية وأدبه وإعلامه؟ ما مدى القوة التي غذى بها الإحساسُ بوحدة القضية والشعور المعادي للولايات المتحدة في المنطقتين أشكالا جديدة من التضامن، وما تبعات ذلك؟ كيف ساهمت معاني "اليسار" المختلفة بكلتيهما في تشكيل أنواع من فهم وسوء فهم العلاقة الجديدة؟ والعلاقات الجديدة الناشئة على مستوى الدول بين القادة في المنطقتين هل تشربتها الجموع السكانية على اتساعها؟ ومسارات التعاون الجنوبي-الجنوبي ذات التاريخ الطويل - والمتمثلة في الطاقة والتجارة والدپلوماسية - كيف تأثرت؟ وبعد انحسار ’المد الوردي‘ في أمريكا اللاتينية وانقلاب ’الربيع العربي‘ إلى شتاء قاتل، ماذا تبقى من هذه التغيرات، وما مستقبلها؟
